In our Primus Management Group culture, we emphasize effective networking. We know that with the appropriate skills to connect with others, our career opportunities can be endless. We can navigate a room at a conference or mixer with greater ease as a result. Here are some things to keep in mind.
Many people tend to be reserved at certain events for a multitude of reasons, most commonly a lack of ease being around others with whom they are unfamiliar. Guess what? Everyone shares this trepidation, even the most seasoned network professionals. Therefore, we remind our people during Primus Management Group’s network training sessions to remember as they introduce themselves to strangers, it’s likely that each person will appreciate a friendly face to break the ice as well. Keep in mind, each friend was once a stranger to us.
Now that we understand that everyone feels somewhat awkward in a networking situation, let’s focus on how to put others at ease. In our Primus Management Group office, one of the ways in which we can encourage others to open up is to ask questions. As we converse, we have a chance to make notes of what is important to them, such as their line of work, interests, and more. Through active listening and continued inquiries, we can uncover common ground upon which to build stronger connections.
It takes effort, but it is possible to be a natural networker.
